Belinda and her elder sibling, Diana were daughters of one Theophilus Kwaku Owusu and   Esther Gyamaah from Koforidua and Sunyani respectively. The latter died in 2002 and left the children with the father who later remarried and gave the children to the new wife instead of the mother of his late wife’s mother who wanted to adopt them.  The father also died in July 2004 and left the children in the care of the stepmother.  With no meaningful resources, the stepmother who was supported sometimes by the Anyaa church of Christ could not go on with the upkeep of the children after a year.

The church, therefore, appealed to the Village for the upkeep of the children instead of giving them to the aged grandmother who they could not trust with the children’s education and proper upbringing. It was also established that not only were the father’s family not having the necessary resources to take up the children’s upbringing, none of them was willing to take up that responsibility. Thus, the children had to be kept and supported by their stepmother and the Anyaa church until they were admitted to the Village of Hope.
